SUPPLIES 4 SUCCESS RECOGNITION
The Board of Education (BOE) presented Supplies 4 Success volunteers with District 41 Vision pins as a way to say thank you for their work. This project benefited 700 students in District 41 and District 89. Over the summer, Supplies 4 Success raised more than $14,000 to purchase school supply kits and backpacks. The project was an outgrowth of the D41 PTA Community Outreach Committee, and Board President Steve Vondrak gave special thanks to Lincoln parent Karen Evans, who started the initiative, as well as to the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce for its support. |

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
Superintendent Dr. Ann Riebock noted that the first days of school are going very well for the most part. The elementary schools have adjusted their schedules to create common time when teachers can work together to address learning needs at their grade level, and the Hadley New Horizons changes have gotten off to a good start, with students participating in a day of team-building as part of Hadley's commitment to creating an environment where students feel safe, happy and ready to learn. The district and First Student have made progress in resolving persistent transportation issues, mainly late buses. Dr. Riebock also reported on the controversy surrounding President Obama's remarks to schoolchildren. Due to logistical issues on that day, the district did not provide live viewing, but has made the speech available to teachers who want to show it later as part of classroom instruction.
AUDIO RECORDING
For the past year, the district has been posting audio recordings of regular BOE meetings on its Web site. It has decided to do the same for special meetings such as retreats and workshops. The BOE asked the administration to see if it could make the recordings easier to listen to and provide features such as fast forward, pause, and rewind.
HADLEY PROJECT TO GO TO BID
The BOE approved the administration's request to go out for bid for a small Hadley addition to be paid for in large part by stimulus funds. Bids will be solicited for both the two- and three-room designs. The space would be used for special education classes. The action came after BOE discussion of the matter at its Aug. 10 and Aug. 24 meetings. The BOE will take action on project approval after bids are received.
STORAGE AGREEMENT APPROVED
The BOE approved a one-year lease renewal with Community Consolidated School District 93 for storage space in the D93 maintenance building in Bloomingdale. District 41 has been leasing this space for several years to store the kits used in the inquiry-based science curriculum. District 41 maintenance staff delivers and retrieves the kits as needed over the course of the year. The annual lease cost is $6,240.
BOARD GOALS
The BOE discussed possible goals for its own work, as distinct from district or school goals. Discussion centered on developing goals for finances, facilities, student achievement, communication and Board development.
About the Glen Ellyn School District Board of Education
Board members are unpaid volunteers, each representing the whole district. The board is accountable to the public and makes decisions as a unit based on what is best for the whole district. The board hires the superintendent, sets instructional policy, approves the budget and ongoing expenditures, and is ultimately responsible for the performance of the district. Board meetings are working sessions held in public during which the board conducts its business, and ample time is always set aside for public participation.
