Gifted Identification
Identification of students eligible for Gifted Services in 2008-2009 will be conducted for children in grades 2-5 between April 22 and May 9.  Identified students will receive curricular extensions from the gifted specialist in math and literacy in grades 3, 4 and 5, in place of their regular classroom instruction.  We also provide gifted services to children in Kindergarten – grade 2 within the general classroom setting, collecting data for future identification.

We identify eligible children through a combination of testing, performance data, teacher recommendation (using the Renzulli Rating Scale of student characteristics) and parent input.  There is a non-verbal process for identifying English Language Learners.

The Gifted Services Team starts by reviewing the results of the Measure of Academic Performance (MAP) tests that all children in these grades take.  MAP measures achievement against academic standards.  Students who perform at high level on MAP and/or whose teachers recommend them will be invited to take the Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT).  CogAT is an ability test that measures learning potential.  The Gifted Services team will also review samples of student work.  Parents of children at this stage of the identification process will be asked to submit an input form with information about their child.  Consistent with state guidelines, about 5% of our students will receive Gifted Services.  If your child is recommended for Gifted Services, you will receive a notification during the first week of June.  If you have questions about the identification process, please contact District 41 at 630-790-6400.
